Chapter 14: Hidden Treasures

The weight of the old envelope Henry had given them hung heavy in Felix’s coat pocket as he and Charlie walked through the early evening fog. The night air felt thick with secrets, as though the town itself was holding its breath, waiting for something—or someone—to crack under the pressure of long-buried truths.

Felix broke the silence. “The spirit’s words led us here. ‘Hidden treasures’...it could mean more than money. A buried truth, a lost legacy. Something important enough to make people kill to protect it.”

Charlie shivered, clutching her coat closer. “So, we’re hunting ghosts and a treasure hunt? I never thought I’d say this, but I’m starting to think baking mishaps sound easy in comparison.”

They reached the edge of town and headed down an overgrown path, the remains of an iron gate looming ahead. Beyond it, a large, dilapidated estate rose from the shadows, its windows dark and silent.

Charlie squinted up at the old building, its age evident in the worn bricks and broken shutters. “Felix, are you sure about this? I don’t see any welcoming committee.”

Felix gave her a wry smile. “If we had one, I’d be more worried. Places like this aren’t supposed to welcome guests.” He held up his flashlight, the beam cutting through the darkness as they carefully picked their way through the tangled weeds and up to the grand entrance.

Inside, they found a maze of dust-laden halls, high ceilings, and uncanny silence. Felix led the way, his steps echoing through the empty corridors. The faintest scent of something old and forgotten hung in the air—a mix of decaying wood, stale paper, and memories long since abandoned.

“What exactly are we looking for?” Charlie whispered as they reached a narrow staircase leading down.

“According to the spirit’s warning, it should be a ‘hidden treasure’...though, in this case, I doubt it’s anything as simple as gold or jewels,” Felix murmured, scanning the walls as he led her down the stairs.

At the bottom, they found a small, hidden door almost invisible against the wall. Felix carefully turned the knob, and the door creaked open, revealing a dark, cramped room.

Charlie wrinkled her nose at the stale air. “Smells like a thousand years of secrets down here.”

Felix took out his flashlight again, illuminating shelves filled with old books, yellowed newspapers, and dusty knickknacks. As they moved further into the room, the light beam landed on a desk littered with fragile-looking documents, ledgers, and a worn, leather-bound diary.

“This...this looks like a ledger of names,” Charlie whispered, picking up a sheet covered in faded ink. “Dates, amounts—these are payments. And look,” she pointed to the initials scrawled next to some of the entries, “these are the initials of half the town’s big players.”

Felix picked up the diary and opened it to a random page. “This belonged to someone who knew every corner of the town’s affairs. Listen to this: ‘They thought no one would find out. But secrets are like bloodstains; they never really wash away.’ Whoever wrote this was documenting everything.
